How can I keep my dog from chewing shoes / furniture / clothes when I'm gone?
Dogs are naturally pack animals and will depend on the "leader" of the pack for security and leadership. If your dog has been appropriately socialized and trained he or she will look to you as the leader of the pack. When you are gone, your dog's leader is gone and he feels anxious, not knowing for sure what to do or how to behave. This is often manifested by inappropriate chewing behavior.
The best gift you can give your dog would be his own "room." A pet taxi or kennel, available at most pet and discount department stores, will serve as a den for your dog and will give him a safe place to be when you're not there. At first, you may need to close the kennel door when you leave the house to make sure he knows he is to stay in the kennel. After a while though, your dog will probably go to his kennel on his own accord when he knows you are leaving. A kennel tells your pet that you are still in control and that he is safe when you are gone. By confining your dog in a kennel you are removing the physical capability to be destructive, as well as providing psychological comfort and security.
For obvious reasons, this strategy works best if started when a dog is a puppy. We recommend kennels for all new puppies. They help with housetraining, as well as general socialization by providing a safe, quiet place to retreat when he's tired or things get too lively for him.
