Teaching Topic: Enrichment for Senior Pets

Today’s topic is about enrichment for senior pets (like Flash pictured above!)

As pets age, their activity will typically decrease, but there minds are still working.  It has been proven that both mental and physical stimulation can improve the well-being of seniors.

  1. Encourage play - best in smaller, more frequent episodes
  2. Make feeding time more fun.  Play hide and seek with your pets food, use toys to dispense the food or try food dispensing puzzles.
  3. Allow for multiple, soft locations for resting.
  4. Stairs or ramps can help pets get onto the bed or couches like normal.
  5. Grooming - It is more important as pets age, to focus on their coat, ears, nails, and teeth.
  6. Use a different path for a walk, teach a new trick, or try a new toy.
